If you look at this photo bigified, you will see the stripes on her ribs and neck; I call them poverty stripes because they make the horse look ribby (she isn't!) and I'm wondering if they are part of the brindle coat pattern. Her dam had them too.
I measured her today; 14-2 and a quarter inch, exactly the same size as Baemer- and she is a growing yearling. Gonna be a big girl! I am sooooooo looking forward to riding her.
Took a couple of neat photos when I was filling the water tubs; we have a heck of a lot of pressure here so we get plenty of bubbles which the young 'uns like to drink. Reminds me of the Merle Haggard song;

I'll be drinkin' that free bubble-up

and eatin' that rainbow stew!

I was wondering what color your girl is technically. I know she is a bay with grey dillution, I think, but is she a roan or called some other color? I just call her beautiful.
You know, you are showing the horse of my dreams.
V is a true beauty!!! Great rainbow shot too..:-))
Beautiful pictures and man is Velvet ever growing, she is gonna be some flashy when Ted gets riding her!
On the strips they just go along with the roan pattern and have no relation to brindle at all.. you can go to this site and also email the owner with any brindle questions and she will help you out there a litter more with those questions then I can. www.justabrindlehorse.com

Gail, Velvet is a blue roan. She is not a bay, which is a reddish brown, or grey, which isn't a dilute. Her basic body color is black, with an even mixture of white hairs. Here is AQHA'a official description:
Blue Roan
More or less a uniform mixture of white with black hairs on the body, but usually darker on head and lower legs; can have a few red hairs in mixture.
A grey horse doesn't have the darker head and legs, which is the best way to tell a roan from a gray.
I know I keep saying this , but dang Velvet is gorgeous! I don't even prefer a blue roan usually , but WOW!!!!!
I don't remember every having seen those poverty stripes on a roan before. Guess I'm not too observant. I'm headed to just a brindle horse to check that out. Thanks for the link.
She sure is a beauty!
Tara, thanks for the link on brindle horses. They sure are interesting.
velvet is a beautiful color!

Ive seen those stripes, but as far as Ive seen they show up more on red roans or sorrels with rabicano genes, but I suppose blues have them too. Roan horses can be so many different shades. And I agree, she sure is pretty!
Gosh, your photos are so pretty! I love the one at the top of your very latest post. What a gorgeous homeplace!
