The smoke of many forest fires fills the air , filtering into this valley from the north and south. The smoke lies on the ground and fills the air, making breathing difficult for some folks. There are no fires close by, but central B.C. from Williams Lake to the Washington border, the "inland desert" part of B.C. has many fires, estimated at around 400 fires. There are also fires in Idaho and Washington State.

We are fortunate to have a lot of dew here; it keeps our pastures from drying out, and hangs on the spiderwebs like drops of pearls in the early morning light. Most mornings I wear rubber footwear to take the mares out to their pasture.
By midday, the face flies are driving the horses to distraction. When I filled up the water tubs today they all came up to be sprayed off, although I did have to put a halter on Coyote Belle, she was happy to stand there and get a good soaking; all of them wanted their faces sprayed too, as long as I sprayed from behind. Even Beamer let me spray him as he stood in the shade of his pen.
Kai got to frolicking after his cool down, and pestered his sister.

She didn't get too upset though, and they all trotted off and buried their faces in the long grass as they went back to grazing.
I was really proud of Beamer today. We had some company overnight, and their 4 year old son got to ride Beamer; the first evening, bareback with me leading him; he sat really well and didn't want to get off. This morning I saddled up and rode first, then put the boy on and led him around. I showed him how to steer with the reins, both directions, and how to stop and back up. I didn't have to lead Beamer, just walked alongside and Beamer followed me as the young fella steered. Then I got on and rode double with him, and much to his delight we did a little trotting and some spins- he was hollering with glee as we went around; Beamer took it all in stride. Afterwards, the children were playing close to him with push toys and he didn't move a muscle. Love that horse!

Horses seem to know don't they. We have horses that love little kids. That Beamer sound like a real gem. I remember the first time I rode a real spin. It was an 8 coupon ride for sure.
What a good boy ,that Beamer! I love the shot of Kai rough housung. Hope you are doing OK in all that smoke with your cold
Fires scare me! Stay safe up there!
Beamer is such a good boy! That is a one of a kind horse!
Great picture's of Kai!
Beamer is such a champ - I expect it's a combination of his sweet temperament and all the good work you do with him!
My horses hate being sprayed with the stuff but the flies are just horrid this year! Just love to see the horses playing, aren't they great to watch!
(and thanks for visiting - it's much appreciated!)
nature amazes me so often. How can my in-laws hay be rotting in the field b/c it won't stop raining when areas all around them are burning up literally and figurativly? And then Beamer...that nature gives animals instincts and they are gentler with children so often. Your descriptions put sweet pictures in my mind, and I loved the pictures you had on your post today. Thanks for sharing.
The fires must be so unsettling for you. How shocking that there are so many going at once.
Beamer deserves a great big hug! And seriously, I just can't get over how big Kai is now. Wow.
Hmm the more I hear about Beamer the better he sounds, you are pretty lucky to have him!
And Kai, wow he is sure looking good.
Just got caught up on your posts. That Graffiti was a little strange, I couldn't quite make it all out...probably a good thing.Too bad you didn't get pics of the little gaffer on Beamer....yup what a good boy.
Cool post and great shots, smoke while bad makes for some great Sunrise and Sunset pics..:-)
What a good boy to babysit that little tyke. Beamer is a worth his weight in gold horse for sure. I bet he'd take good care of my son Jackson, too, unlike the wicked Bella who bucked him to the moon.
I expected more fires this summer, but we've been getting a lot of rain and not as many lightning storms.
Your photos are great, especially the one with Kai :)
