Well it's that time of year again; the flowers are on their last blossoms,

the wood stove is all fired up,

the mornings are misty again,

and it's time to get to work on Chickory so I can have some good riding next year.
This is the 7th time I've been on her back. I am quite pleased with her, because even though I don't work with her often, we pick up right where we left off. A couple of little exercises to check where she is at, and then it's on with the lesson. Today I wanted to get her to trot with me riding her, but it is almost as if she is being really careful with me when I'm riding. I did manage to get a decent pace at the walk, after I took the video, and to get better whoa and back-ups. What I'd like to try is to get someone else to ride with me so that she can follow the pace. I think she would focus more on going forward if she had a purpose.

Suits the blog name ther Shirley. Another good horse.I started Johnnie kind of peicmeal as well , not too many days in a row. But I think if they are good they are goos nad the work is consistent so ... She sure seems nice and settled
I had a little gelding this year that had no go and all woah. Put a rope on my saddle horn and when he didn't listen to my legs I would over and under him. Worked like a charm. Great little bugger to ride, his dad is riding him all over the place.
What a good girl she is! Must make you very proud.
Apache refused to trot when I first bought her. I could urge, squeeze, kick and give her my energy, but she still refused to trot. She would walk oh so very slowly and carefully. She still does, but something finally changed on one of our rides a couple months after buying her and while out on the trails she gave me a wonderful trot and then a fun canter, with only a quiet request from me.
I love horses that seem to know what you're ready for, and seem to recognize if you're not fully balanced, relaxed and comfortable. :)

love a misty fall morning! Gorgeous! where's my cup of cider?
I'll come ride with you! Just let me pack a few things. I'll be right over!
Sarah, c'mon up! I'd be delighted to have you visit!
Lisa, I seriously think Chickory figures she has to take care of me- like your Apache does for you.
It is sad that summer is coming to an end, but I am really looking forward to lazy days in front of the fire!
Chickory looks good, next year I will be doing the same with my Mustang!
I love that third picture! Chickory is going to be a great horse! Doing good job. I wish I could find someone that I could ride with.
Nothing like a reason to do something. I'm not sure if it's the horse who focuses more or just us (focusing) pestering them less. I know I forget about my horse and let him do his job when I'm focused on a cow.
That pic of Velvet is pretty cool. My Princess would not canter all winter inside, she was lazy, but I dont think she thought it worthwhile with nowhere to go, but once she got it, she got it and is good now with not much urging.
Kinda sad to see summer end. Shutting down the pond, watching our Koi go into hibernation, birds changing color, cutting the blooms off my overwintered plants, and of course hoping the horses get fuzzy enough to stay warm.
Chickory is progressing, that's all that counts. She looks like a thinker.
Way to go Chicory. Love the Velvet shot.
LOVE the misty shot!!! :-)
You can really see Chicory thinking about what you're asking. She's trying awfully hard. Looks like she's coming along well if this only your 7th time up.
