Bad Velvet, and a saddle update

Note to self- always give the horses a once-over even if you think nothing is wrong. When I put the mares out this morning, I barely glanced at them. But when I brought them in this evening, I noticed right away that Velvet had a swelling on her neck right behind her jaw, and a bump on her knee.
It looks like she got her head stuck in something and pulled back, banging her knee in the process. There is heat in both places, so I hosed the swellings, dried her as best I could, applied peppermint oil for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic qualities, wished I had some DMSO, and put a blanket on her for the night (cold freezing night!) Well, I guess it was a horse eating blanket at first, but then it was horses eating blanket!

It was thoroughly investigated by Chickory, and she gave it the taste test too.

I wonder if there will be anything left of it by morning? It's a really tough cordura blanket that has survived many horses, so I hope so.

We went to Brian's Saddle Shop on Saturday so Ted could install a stock waterer for them, and I got to see the start of my saddle. The ground seat is under way, and the horn cap is installed. Brian was working on the tooling on the cap. There will be rawhide trim on the horn cap and the cantle.

I played around with the stamps that Brian will be using on it- so please forgive the sloppy job on this sample I made- Brian does it so much better! But it gives you an idea of what the pattern will be. It's the Association basket stamp and a pitchfork border.

Tomorrow I've got some fun Beamer photos for you- if blogger cooperates!

Blogger has been quite the pain with uploading pics recently.

Sorry Velvet's got an owie. I haven't had to use DMSO on any of our horses, but have thought about picking up the roll-on DMSO just to have it on hand. The only thing that I don't like about DMSO is the taste after an accidental contact. I always double glove when using it, so I was really excited to see it in roll-on form like deoderant.

I love tooling leather. I have my grandfathers stamps and carver here. If you really want blankets to last get some from schneider saddlery (sstack.com) some have 2 year guarantee's on them I personally have them and they seriously are as close to indestructible as they can be.

Hope velvet get better. The saddle is going to be a beauty! Can't wait to see it when it is done! My Annie has a sore right front leg and really can't tell what is going on. Not much swelling and she is holding is pretty straight. I don't see any thing in the frog or her hoof. Will have to have the vet out tomorrow.

Syd, I've had this blanket for 10 years, and I checked it this morning- not a rip or tear anywhere. It's made by Glover, the Canadiana Storm model. I swear by them.

I hope Velvet woke up this morning with no swelling or discomfort! Your saddle looks like its going to be lovely. The idea of having a saddle custom made never occured to me till my friend had one done last winter. Her's was so neat and not hearing about yours makes me want to have one done also! It just sounds wonderful to be able to design your own saddle like that!

Looks like it's going to be a very fancy saddle! I had no idea stamping leather could be so easy. Your stamp design looks great. I don't know about the pitchfork design. Reminds me of a snake's tongue. But I love that basket weave. :)
