Foose was sunning himself on the bed today; he's such a funny cat, lays on his back all the time. I haven't let the cats see the owl, I don't want it to have any more stress than it already has being cooped up.

The owl, which we have nick-named "Barby" because of the barbwire, is really improving. It's eating, and doesn't seem to mind being handled. Thanks to Cheyenne, who commented that owls don't drink, I haven't been trying to get it to drink, but make sure that he gets juicy meat.

He is looking much brighter, and seems to like the kennel we keep him in. When we are done feeding him we hold him in front of the cage and he hops right in. I will be talking to the vet tomorrow about getting him to an owl rehab place on the coast, but think that Barby might just be well enough to fly in a day or two. I hope so, it would be wonderful to see him fly away. I'll let Ted be the one to release him, he just loves having this lovely bird to care for.
In reading up on Barred Owls, I found out that they are one of two types that have dark eyes, the other large owl with dark eyes is the barn owl.
Blogger won't let me load videos, but when it does, I'll put one or two on. I notice that blogger will be doing image upload maintenance tomorrow evening, so hopefully they will get it right!

"The Owl and the Pussy-cat went to sea. In a beautiful pea green boat"
that was all I rememered of it , so I looked it up,found it here, the owl and the pussy cat .Thanks for the smile Shirley took me back to my childhood for a bit.Glad the owl is on the mend!
I`m pleased to hear the owl is improving!!! Well done you!..I`m sure it will be ok now, to check to see if the Owl is still improving, look at the eyes. If they are dehydrated, the eyes will look dull, and the feathers on the body will become sort of dry, and not soft and fluffy. But well done its not easy.
Foose is so funny, my kitting does the same thing but when she goes outside! It is so cool to know that he is eating and getting better! It is even better to know that you can handle him!!
What a gorgeous bird!!
i did some reading last night too:D one site said that when they talk, it sounds like, "who cooks for you"? hee hee hee! what a sweetie that owl is! female barred owls are larger than the men. they are also less colorful than the men. i love the feathers, they look really silvery. could be that is is a new owl. that might be why its not minding being handled. could have been born this year. i also read that they can live up to 18 years in the wild! isnt that neat?
Oh Shirley, Barby is just beautiful. Wow. I'm sure he's so appreciative you're there taking care of him until he's ready to fly again. Wow!
I can't tell you how very happy I am! I had tried to think optimistically for Barby, but wasn't having much luck. I think its kind of often rare for these animals to recover. So glad to hear that he/she is doing so well. Wouldn't it be neat, if upon release, he/she stays nearby and you can watch him over the years? He probably won't be afraid of you now, so maybe that will happen!
Glad to hear the owl is getting better. I do hope Ted can be the one to release it and see it's freedom.
Wow he is beautiful! Im glad to see him adjusting well and eating, i too was worried he wouldnt, I know of one other case they rescued and owl (he was in a forest fire and was burnt) and it took a long time for him to eat (probly in more pain though)
Looks like you a re doing a good job with him.
