For the birds!

When the goldfinches first came to my feeders, there were only a couple of them. If you recall, when I first showed photos of them, I hoped they'd tell their buddies all about the free groceries at Diamond Lazy H farm- well they sure did! I'm now feeding a flock of around 100, and they empty both feeders every day. I think I need to buy stock in the sunflower seed company!

They clean up the seeds they spill, too. The cats seem to be leaving them alone.

I've been watching for other types of birds to come, and yesterday I spotted this Grey-Crowned Rosy Finch.

He wouldn't come down and eat, but he watched carefully, and I expect he'll be back, probably with buddies.
Went for a nice bareback ride on Beamer, and we saw our hawk again. Perched on top of the tree, he watched us approach, and once again, graced me with a photo op- this time from behind.

This hawk does fly-bys over our yard, so I'm very careful with Merle- he's always on a string, close to me.
My ride on Beamer was wonderful as usual, and I practiced bareback posting a little- can you say sore inner thighs? I always practice riding with no hands , inspired of course by Stacey Westfall, and it's a lot of fun. We can sidepass, circle, and stop, and we are working on the spin; if I start it with the reins, I can continue without them, and we are working on the bridleless back up too. All at a walk of course. This next pic is for Janice who says I never show Beamer all dirty; no matter how much I brush I can't get the residual summer dust off him. I may have to vacuum him.

I took Chickory for a walk, in hand, and we checked fence in the summer mare pasture. She was very patient with me as I wound up a lot of electric fence wire that had fallen down- it's the small wire that she was tangled in earlier in the fall, and tore a bunch of it down. She didn't try to dive to the grass and graze as I was struggling to wind up all that wire, and showed curiosity and calmness even when we got a loop of it around her front hoof, standing quietly while I sorted things out. Good Chickory!
I noticed that she has a chapped eye, and I wonder if any of you know what I can do to treat this:

Poor girl! I'm not sure if it's pink eye, the other eye is just fine.

Vetricyn has an eye ointment gel out now, if you can find it, I like that.
Now, posting bareback. Girl...lol, you are gonna be hurtin' tomorrow.. I could do it so well as a kid, as an adult...HA! Much more painful. Those muscles don't DO that anymore.

Great pics as always!

Nice shots as usual. Your birds are much prettier than mine all I get around here is crows and they are annoying.....I'd rather have none.I want to go for a ride so bad but first we had ice and I couldn't get to the tack shed now it's just too cold!Hey he is a horse....with dirt:) I now have a mental pic of you out there with the vaccum giving him the once over....thanks for the chuckle.

We put feed out for the birds the a couple of weeks ago and the chickadee's are finally coming in. You will find that once you have snow on the ground you will go through even more bird seed! I think it is worth it though!! I would rather ride bareback anyday, just because I get lazy once in a while and don't want to deal with a saddle.

Love your bareback riding routine! I like the soreness (the your still mobile kind) reminds me I have muscles and it makes me happy to be using them.

Hey you could hand vacuum Beamer, with some desensitizing. We were required to use hairdryers on the horses at a stable I used to ride at. Took f-o-r-e-v-e-r to untack & dry an unclipped horse in the winter. Noise is about the same. On a similar note, I vacuum my cat. He loves it and comes running every time I turn it on.

I envy you the finches....all that's left here are sparrows and magpies. I'd probably use polyspron on the eye just because I have it around.

Very cool, looks like all the birds here have flown the proverbial coop..:-)

...ha ha! Let me know how the "vacuuming" goes. Also, I'd love to know what you end up doing to treat the eye...
