Fall colours

No, I'm not talking about leaves; my horses are sporting their fall colours. That's something I like about having smokey blacks, they change colour every season. Remember Belle's buckskin look?
Here is how she looks today, frolicking in the frost:
Back to black! Rio is the same way- here he is back in August, all golden brown:
Today, he's a horse of a different colour!
Looks like a liver chestnut, doesn't he? I plan on getting a DNA test on his colour soon.
The other horses don't change colour much- Gussie gets a little darker red,
especially around her shoulder and flank. Chickory doesn't change- just gets fuzzier!
Beamer in the summer will fade out a little, not much, and he gets a rich black all over in winter. He gave me the I-need-my-blankie- look this morning, we had a really heavy frost as you can see in the last 3 photos.
The mark on his nose is from trying to nibble the grass tidbits under his panel fence. His wound is healing really well, if I wasn't having so much trouble with my camera I'd get a photo- can't do close-ups.

I'm always surprised by how much they change color. Not to much changes with mine. Mattie gets blacker. Moxie loses her golden tone and looks like a dark chestnut, Jade stays the same and Jazz gets quite dark....her body color kinda blends into her black legs more. -6 here this morning Jazz better grow some hair soon.....hmmm maybe that's why she is so much warmer to the touch than the rest....I guess she doesn't need a bunch of hair.

Oh you are so right this is as different and as pretty as the beautiful fall leaves I am looking at at this moment out my window. They are awesome colour coats. B

My two chestnut boys stay the same color, winter and summer. Dawn, who is a bright red bay, gets much darker in the winter - lots of black overtones - she's getting quite dark right now.

They sure do change colors! I remember my horse, Gypsy, always turned a glossy dark brown during her younger years towards summer...winter always seemed to be a blacker coat.

Funny how even the smoky black gets a different color. I think thatès what my Razz is (even though the paint assoc wont recognize it) and she is almost blacker than a lot of black horses most of the year except spring and fall when she is shedding.
