Mesa at 3 weeks
I am quite happy with my beautiful filly! She is quite elegant and she is nice to be around.
She is athletic, and really uses her hind end and for a first foal she is developing well.
I love her even socks, and her plain brown wrapper is fine with me.
And I really love that she has Beamer's eyes!
Yesterday Rosalee spent quite a bit of time in with them, and it went well. Rosalee did try herding Mesa around.....
but little miss had something to say about it!
Coulee reminded her a few times to stay away from HER baby, and I have to show the next two photos because it was quite funny and humbling for Rosalee: Mesa went for a gallop and Rosalee though she should join in and did one of her little leap/twists- and wiped out! I didn't get the fall but I got the aftermath:
She's not rolling in those photos, she skidded on her back in the soft wet ground. Oh Rosalee! She was well behaved after that!

She is pretty adorable. And Rosalee that's too funny upside down lol
Mesa is just beautiful, I love those nice socks also. How embarrassed Rosalee must have been to crash in front of the new kid!
Wow, that is an embarrassing moment! I'm learning so much about babies from you. Next year we may be breeding Cowgirl and we'll need to know everything we can. So, what are the issues with first time mare foals? Do the foals usually grow out of their initial issues?
Linda- every mare is different. Some mares foal amazing perfect foals first time and every time, and some maiden mares just aren't sure what is going on and may get crabby with the foal- it all depends on how strong their mothering instinct is.
If the mare carries high and tight and doesn't get real big (like Coulee) the foal may get cramped in the womb and have wobbly hind legs at first, like Mesa, but that comes around. Or they might have tight tendons and look like they are walking tippy toes, but a shot of oxytetracycline fixes that- consult vet in either case.
I like to be there for a first time foaling mare to make sure things go well, so plan on either having a foal cam or camping out near the foaling area if possible.
Yes, most foals do just fine and time fixes lots of things; it's good not to get too stressed out about things because they usuaklly work out!
Aww, adorable baby! The star and the two socks - she's lovely! (And Rosalee! Hahaha!)
This is a lovely blog. Nice to meet you. :)
That's very good to know. I would definitely be camped out.
Welcome Green Dogs! Just curious, how did you find my blog?
Mesa has a regal look to her. Poor Rosalee...what a bummer:(
I know it's not funny, but how do you not laugh at Rosalee wiping out and ending up on her back in a sliding stop? Silly girl! Glad she didn't get hurt. That look on her face...and Mesa running to mom. Glad you are happy with your girl, she is a cutie!
