The pup

The last two days have been rather trying. Tay was quite agitated and didn't want me out of her sight, so I spent all of yesterday sitting with her.

She was super restless, and was ruffling up all the dog beds, a sure sign of imminent whelping. At 11 pm she had her first pup... sadly, it was stillborn. A large pup. I stayed with her all night, making myself a makeshift bed out of cushions and she snuggled right next to me laying her head on me. In the morning I had Ted keep an eye on her as I rushed down to feed the horses. At 11 am this morning, she had her second pup, again a large stillborn pup. It was a real struggle for her. There was a foul smell with the sack that was attached to it, it was quite black too. I called the vet to ask about that and if he thought there would be any live pups in there. I had barely hung up and she gave birth to the third pup- this one smaller and very much alive! I quickly checked him out and dried him off- Tay wasn't quite sure what to do with him but started licking him, and her maternal instincts really kicked in when I got him suckling. Now she is quite possessive of him!

In fact to get her to go do her business I have to carry him - she keeps a close eye on him but gets it done. I'm hoping in a couple of days she will chill out a bit.
Since this is the only pup, I have offered him to the owner of the pup's dad as we had a deal that he would either take a pup or the price of a pup, and his daughter wanted a pup. I will wait to see if she wants him before I make any other plans, and she will get to name him.

Saint Francis will keep the pups in his heart, and memory. May he always walk with the puppy and watch over him as he grows.

What an ordeal. 💔 But I’m happy she will have at least one pup to love on for a while.

She's so beautiful! I know the pain of stillborns, my GSD had only 2 surviving puppies we had to give to the breeder as payment. one of them was blind, born without retinas (?) but we prayed for him and had a miracle. the vet couldn't explain it: ) the other puppy needed tube feeding, i was only 15 years old.

My first and last dog. She was my shadow, I was her god. It was beyond flattering to be her whole world. After she died I was done.

I'm left with negativity because the seller insisted we breed her even though her xrays were terrible, what ended up killing her. Why would breeders breed bad hips consistently? Is there any wisp of reasoning behind it? Like the lack of diversity in Arabian horses that says we should breed disease carriers?

God bless your one puppy.

Tay is fine and is getting more relaxed about leaving him to go about her business.
Thanks Lytha, and what a sad story about your dog. Yes it's important to be responsible breeders and that is why Tay will be getting spayed before her next heat. I won't risk this happening again.

Sorry about the two stillborns, but glad Tay is doing good. Looking forward to some cute puppy pictures!

Stillborn puppies are such a sadness. Mum was a registered breeder of Labs and had I think five or six litters over quite a few years only when she wanted a pup for herself, mostly with very good luck, but the last one, with my own girl, herself bred by mum and the sire chosen by her, was the deal breaker for me. 11 pups, three born dead and one we had to put down a week later as circulation never reached his hind feet properly, and my girl got an infection to boot. I still feel the trauma of that litter. Oh, and no that GSD breeder was not ethical. We would never have used a dog or bitch who didn't have great x-rays and all DNA testing done, and my girl's only daughter, who we kept, was spayed early (and kept by us) due to not having a good Lab temperament, despite the care that went into mating two lovely dogs.
