She walks on water

Well, in water anyway! I always like my youngsters to learn to walk through water while being led, and since we've been having a big ole meltdown the last couple of days, it was the perfect opportunity to ask Velvet to walk through the barnyard lakes  puddles. They are plenty wide, and she only gave me a mini "do I hafta" before calmly walking through. Good Velvet!

Then it was off to the hitching rail for grooming, and she was on her best behavior. Chickory got to come out and get brushed, then it was Gussie's turn, and we went for a ride. She was a little anxious at first, so I asked for lateral work every time her head came up and she started her little jig. Then the other mares were galloping and whinnying, so she got a little tense- a perfect opportunity to trot circles to get her mind back on me! When I could feel her relax, I sent her out of the circle at a nice swinging walk and we toured the snowy hayfield enjoying the beautiful sunshine.

Me 'n' my dogs and a good horse to ride, and sunshine- now that's a good day! It doesn't take a lot to make me happy.

We don't have the standing water around most of the time but it sure is nice when a horse has had the opportunity to wade out in some and not have a fit when they do see it.

I do the same thing with my young ones--walking them through water--old ones, too. You DO have lakes around your place! And your ride looked absolutely beautiful.

walking through water is pretty important, and the more they can learn when young the better, I always figure!
