Summer days

For the first time this year we took the dogs to the river; it's still high and murky so we only stayed a few minutes, just long enough to cool them off, and to introduce Merle  to the  concept of swimming.
I must admit I was kind of merciless to the poor li'l guy, I just took him out in about a foot and a half of water and let him go. He did great! The water was rather cold, so only twice in for him and that was enough. He got wrapped in a towel for the ride home.
The skeeters are back in full force, and I lit the smudge for them tonight after watching Belle throw herself down and roll in the dust and then lay there groaning and complaining; then she got up and went over to the other mares and just stood there and pouted. I watched long enough to make sure it was the bugs and not colic that was bothering her, then I fired up the smudge; I have it in the alley between  the pens and the smoke drifted in to  Beamer's pen first, much to his delight.
He stood there for quite a while, making sure he was covered in smoke perfume.
I'm officially on holidays now, and tomorrow I head over to Janice's with my red roan mare. It's too hot to do a lot of riding, and the mares are out of shape (not to mention the riders!) so we won't be doing anything strenuous, just some easy trails with nice scenery.

What do you use to light your smudges in? I'd really like to burn some for my horses.

Poor Merle, he must have weighed twice as much once he got all that hair wet! Swimming would be quite a workout for him lol

Oh I love that last shot. I do not know much about horses but I am learning. We have not had mosquitoes here I think they do not do well in the drought that seems to be the only good thing about drought but the black flies were all over the cows yesterday in the bush for the first time will have to watch for pink eye.
Have fun on your relaxing ride sounds wonderful I have not ridden in years.
Your dogs are so cute swimming. B

cdn, I took a steel 45 gallon barrel and Ted cut it in half. I fill it with old hay or bedding, and I have 5 gallons of used oil from a restaurant deep fryer; I pour a couple of cupfuls over the hay. I usually use a piece of paper to light everything, and once it's going I put some manure-soaked bedding or hay on top . The oil keeps everything burning for a long time. This time, the wind came up a bit later so I had to cap it with the lid from the barrel.

Interesting! How long does it take the horses to figure out to stand there?

I need a couple of those around here. Love the shots....smart boy. I'm so excited for you to get here. I have figured out a few places to ride that suit our needs, since one is barefoot and pregnant....ha ha ha I didn't realize that is a human reference until I finished typing it.A few of the places will be new to me but I think the footing will be Ok, I guess we will find out.

@ thecrazysheeplady- Beamer stands over the smudgepot impatiently waiting for me to light it. The first time I did this and the smoke drifted over to the mare pen, they all came right away and stood in the smoke.

Never heard of a smudge pot, but it makes sense. Enjoy your ride with Janice, can't wait to read about it!

We are mostly done with mosquitoes here, now we have moved on to deer flies and nose flies. Which are worse when we ride unfortunately :(

Wow you get quite a bit of smoke from that!
