Clancy goes back to work

At long last, Clancy is walking normally. Today I saddled her up to do ground work exercises. Since she has gained weight, I decided to see if the Wade saddle fits her now, and yes it does.  She still is a little concerned about being saddled, but with proper fitting saddles, properly placed, she will get over it.
What d'ya mean vacation is over? I was just getting used to it!
I used the ground work exercises I learned in the clinic. She has issues crossing her inside hind foot in front of the  other. I kept it really basic until she got comfortable with it, but at the start she was kind of plopping the foot down and stepping on her outside hind a lot. Seems stiff in the hip, maybe from being sore in the front. Not flexing good in the neck at first but I put the snaffle on her and asked for  90* bend, and with the rein in my hand held onto the breast collar strap to keep steady, and just waited until she stopped moving before I released. Then I asked for her to walk that hind end around in a circle before releasing.
Here's a video that shows what I was looking for.
Then I went to the exercise of sending her around me, and ask for a step or two over with the hind feet, then continue on with a smooth movement. She was a little sticky at first, wanting to face up after the step over, but we got that sorted out.
The next thing I worked on was the back up, using the slobber strap of the macate to ask for a backwards step; about 10% pressure straight back, and if she ignored that, bump the side of her jaw with the ring of the snaffle, increase the amount of bump until she starts to move a foot. The idea is to not pull back harder with the rein if she ignores the good deal of light pressure backwards, but to make it uncomfortable for her to ignore it. Pretty soon, she was starting the step back with only really light pressure. Of course, all these exercises were done on both sides.
It's interesting doing these simple tasks with her, it sure shows the holes in her training. She lets me flag her all over, not concerned at all, but on her right side she gets flighty when I go to her hip.
Lots more work to do with her, my plan is to build a really good relationship with her from the ground up, and see how far we can go. Should be really rewarding.

I guess for heavier set women, the horse has to be fairly tall, and big boned?

No, not necessarily. Short compact horses can carry a lot of weight.
