You'd almost think it's spring, with sunshine and blue skies during the day! But the mornings , well, we still have this going on:
It warmed up beautifully for my visit to Shayla. It was a vet day, one of the Percheron stallions got his teeth floated (it took 2 people to hold his head up for the vet!) and Boe got gelded. Boe was a good boy! The vets liked how easy he was to handle for his needles and general handling. I think they expected a 10 month old colt to be almost wild.
After that we walked down to the mare herd, visited with Gussie and took photos to compare our telephoto lenses. Shayla did end up getting the Canon telephoto that goes to 200.
We even managed a couple of action shots, there is one weanling in the herd, Donna, who was feeling quite sassy.

Dolly was having none of it! Then Donna took off and that's when I got the first photo of her.
Mostly the mares were just basking in the sun. Not the crispest photo, but they look so attentive and sweet.

They all are, or should be, in foal to one of their 2 Percheron stallions, with the exception of Eva (from my last post on visiting there) who was bred to their black Quarter Horse stallion.

It is quite something to stand in the midst of all these gentle giants. Several of them must be at least 18 hh if not more.
Still no foals to report, Concho is at 353 days and holding... Daphne is at 343 and since she is a maiden, you bet Shayla has many sleepless nights going on!

They really are majestic. I'd be visiting them as much as I could, too. I can't wait to see their babies. Soon!
They are all so pretty! I love their thick fur coats, and can’t imagine the cold there (I’m in Houston). Lovely photos!
kbryan- I watched the Houston rodeo on Cowboy Channel and heard how warm it is there! The horses are shedding now here, some more than others.
Yes, it seems we are skipping spring all together and heading straight into summer. Stay warm!

You and Shayla sure have a lot in common. Now you've added photography :)) I am glad she went with the 70-200mm. Camera bodies get upgraded, but good glass lasts forever (as long as you don't drop/scratch them). One thing to consider: I use/d a sturdy monopod when shooting with that lens for a long time, at horse shows or whatever. Also when getting paid taking portraits. Although I much prefer hand holding, but not at the sacrifice of sharpness when it counts. I like mono better than tripods for mobility sake, but I shoot mostly action. There you go, two more cents lol.
Lady is so beautiful! I can only imagine the feeling of being surrounded by so much sizable grace & energy. You should have seen the look on Brad's face when I told him about 353 & 343 days-n-counting.

One of the coolest mules I ever rode was a Percheron/draft mule named Max. He was 17 hands and I had to get on a picnic table to mount him. He became a family mule and cared for little children who would ride him double without a saddle.
I grew to have an appreciation for them because of their gentle nature.
PS looks like the lens is fantastic!
