The second change was not an easy decision for me.
It's something that I have had to work up to.
I have decided to sell my mares, and get out of raising foals.
The heartbreak of losing 3 foals this year was the deciding factor. I can't keep the mares and not raise foals because I know how good those foals are, so to remove the temptation, they are being rehomed. Coyote Belle, once I get the 5 panel test done on her, will be going to Fleetwood Farms where she will be reunited with Chickory, and be bred to Jazz Poco Goldun Blue, with a likelihood of raising some lovely grulla babies as she is homozygous for black.
Gussie will be travelling to Saskatchewan to my friend Carol's place (All These Pretty Horses blog) where she will be either sold to a ranch type home, or go into Carols broodmare band to be bred to Blue Shadow Jets, her big blue/bay roan stallion and raise some big ranch colts.
I may or may not sell Josie, time will tell. I haven't decided for sure yet.

Sad to read but I sure understand.Love your blog been reading it for a good bit.Any word yet on Stella"s test results.It sure is hard to lose those colts.Please keep blogging.

It's hard to make those life changing decisions.... been there.
I understand. I was so traumatised by my Lab's litter of pups. (My girl was bred by my mum who is a registered breeder, and the litter was planned by her.) What with losing a couple of pups at birth and one a week later despite our best efforts, I know exactly why you are getting out of the breeding game. It's lovely when it all goes well, but when it goes bad it can go very very bad. Some are tough enough to handle it and go on breeding, and some aren't. That's ok, we don't all have to be the same.
Sad to read, but I honestly think I'd do the same thing if I had been through what you've been through. I'd keep little Josie, but that's coming from, well, far from a trainer who's only been around "babies" for a few months because of the ones at the barn! ;)
Ohhh Shirley, I could tell something was shifting in your world...you are much stronger then I in making hard decisions. I must admit, I am surprised you are letting Gussie go. Hope you'll keep tabs on your wonderful mares & share some updates. I always look forward to hearing from you & seeing your beautiful photos. Sending you a big hug!!
My friend, I KNOW how HARD this decision was for you, but you can rest assured that miss Gussie, wil either find the best home I can for her, or she will spend her days here, having some wonderful babies, who knows, she may give a nice stud colt, that you want to return to you!!!

Shirley, I am so sorry to read this. I have hit or miss on your blog this year, we have had a full summer here... and the last time I read, you had just lost the pretty foal. I'm glad Rio is coming home to you... and it seems you have made a wise decision, though I know how hard it must be for you.
That's a completely understandable decision. Your mares will have very good homes and continue to pass on their good genes. Rio coming home is a positive. And there's something about that little chestnut filly . . . I like her a lot.

tough decision Shirley, but I am sure you are making the best choice for you. And the homes you have found sound like a great fit for both mares , guess I just have to figure out how to get Miss Andee out there in the next year or so to be bred to Mr Handsome
Wow some big changes! But sounds like a solid plan, will be nice to get some riding in, even though you will miss the mares.
