Beamer stuff

Sarah was asking what is going on with Beamer's knee; a couple of years ago he tore a muscle right above the knee, it wasn't tender or hot by the time I noticed it, and it never seemed to bother him. Then this year he has edema in the knee right below the torn muscle. Again, no heat or soreness, but I worry that if I ride him much it will develop into arthritis, hence the "semi-retirement" comment. Here's what it looks like:
It doesn't seem to be bothering him as you can see by how much fun he was having the other day when he got some turn out time in one of the bigger pens.
It's his left knee, and he flexes it just fine!

Looking like a blanket Appaloosa! (This one's for Sherry and Mikey!)

Power take-off!

You can see the lump above the knee in this shot.

Showin' off!

You can see that he doesn't favor it at all. Excuse the noise in the background, that's Merle complaining about being left out of the action.

This shot cracks me up.... "I did good, didn't I?"

Sure dont seem to bother him, I wonder if even light riding would help prevent arthritis?

He sure doesn't look like he is in pain. Understand your concern, however. He sure shows off great! Beautiful!

This will probably sound odd, but a good horsewoman here told me when I was concerned about Gato's big knee that "horses don't need knees" and that he'd probably never be bothered by it. And he's never taken a bad step. Here's to many more years of Beamer fun!

He sure is a handsome boy :) I hate those odd lumps and bumps that happen. My boy has a small one on his knee. I had it vetted and x-rayed. They told me he'll be fine on it, until he's not. So I quit running barrels at full speed, but otherwise I use him and he's been good so far.
It certainly doesn't seem to be slowing Beamer down any. What a great horse :) He is magnificent!

My 10 yr old mare has had a swelling like that since I got her at 5 months. She's never been lame, and like Mikey said they'll be fine on it, until they're not. For the most part, I don't worry any more. He is gorgeous BTW.

He looks good..as long as it doesn't bother him you should be in good shape. Is it sqishy or firm..squishy would be fluid..his is so darn handsome:)

Back in April of 2008, Colt and his half brother Winchester had some time off because of snow. I was working for Todd at the time and boarded Colt there. We would turn the two boys out in his HUGE outdoor arena. Colt came up with a swollen knee without any lameness (which looks much like what Beamer's got). But, I was really concerned for his future performance career.

I took Colt to Idaho Equine for radiographs. I found the bill in Colt's file, but not the diagnosis. What I do remember is Dr. Knox saying it's an injury that happens VERY often in race horses. They over extend their knee and it makes a very tiny spot which then fills with edema working like a lubricant. I was reassured that his performance career would not be compromised.

Sorry that I can't remember what it was called. You may want to do a bit of research.

Of course, this may not be what Beamer's got going...but he definitely looks sound!
