I believe it's called Good Friday because it is the day that Jesus' work of salvation was accomplished and heaven was opened for souls. Before then, no souls went to heaven, but were in Limbo awaiting the work of the Messiah to be accomplished. See Mathew 27:52

My husband said, "Why do you call it Good Friday if it was the day Jesus died?"
I have no answer. I'm just glad he recognizes it and celebrates it.
