My hoof trimmer came yesterday to trim Jayne and she also trimmed Dally. I have only picked up Dally's feet a few times, and she has been quite willing to let me so I have just let it be an occasional thing; if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
As you can see, she was a very good girl! She will be 6 weeks old on Sunday. It's important to keep a foal's feet balanced as they grow, their bones are so soft that any imbalance can result in undesirable formation.

She is so quick on her feet that I have to be on the ball to get any action shots of her. The only thing I don't like about my camera is on the action setting, it will take a burst if you hold the shutter down a fraction of a second too long, then it has to go through all the burst photos before you can get another shot- by then Dally has stopped.
All that lovely green? That is common mallow. Now that I only have a couple of horses in this pen, the weeds are taking over and I don't spray this pen. So I have to mow or weed whack to keep it under control. However, with all the shortages in the supply chain due to the mismanagement of world trade over this panicdemic, parts for lawn mowers are almost impossible to get, and we have to baby our aging John Deere riding mower. The local dealer can't even get new tractors and mowers, their supplier in the US has little or no inventory to send to all the JD dealers. So- that means weed whacking. I may have to hire someone, this old body can't take much of that.

Oh wow, Shirley--she did so good for the feet work. I'm amazed. You've raised the bar for what I envision doing with Epona! We are having weed issues, too, and many of them refuse to die. They're extra hearty this year. Speaking of mowers, ours bit the dust, and it was a six year old, very nice zero turn Hustler. Yesterday, my husband had to go shopping for a new one, and yes, they are low on inventory. It was slim pickings, but he ended up getting a zero turn Husqvarna. It wasn't cheap, which is a tough hit right at the time we need to be putting hay in the barn. As for the old mower, they are also way out on fixing mowers--at least a month--so we will take that one in and, hopefully, sell it when it's fixed. By then, there will probably be an even worse shortage of mowers, and it will be worth a bit.
I went shopping with my daughter the other day, and it was really depressing to see the selection, and the empty stores. So much has changed. The prices are going up so fast, too. Lumber. Housing. Our neighbor's are selling their home, and they're listing it much higher than they originally thought they would--last year. The realtor thinks they will easily get it at 1.2 million. They would have taken 800k just six months ago. Good for them, but it makes me wonder how my kids will ever be able to afford a horse property--or any property. The apartments in our area only have a .5% vacancy rate, too. Just crazy, crazy times.
Linda- this won't last, reality will come crashing down soon and all that is inflated has to change. It is unsustainable in it's current form.

Our weeds are ridiculous too. It's just so hard to keep up with it all. I think I'm going to declare weeds a new form of wildflower and say the heck with it soon.
The prices will come down as soon as everyone is back to work and production starts again I would think.
Dicamba/MCPA. I cannot live without them. My farm would be overrun with blackberries, thistles, and nettles. I have only a simple push mower, but I cannot weed whack, I don't like plants flying at my face fullspeed.
Dally is such a well built pretty girl. She did good for the farrier. I've never seen anyone trim while on the ground. Seems riskier, but she clearly knows what she is doing. Weeds always seem to win the war, it's annoying.
She is so darn cute! Wear your safety glasses if you weed whack! IT is hard work...I just do around the trees in front a little at a time. I hate that job! We are babying our old lawn mower too, but my brothers have newer ones so I could borrow those if there is a break down:(
