If you remember Belle's history, she has a penchant for foaling on or near the full moon. Well, the moon is full this evening and sure enough, Belle foaled this morning.
Also true to form, it's a colt! No surprise there - this is her 12th foal and she has only ever had 2 fillies. So after her 4:45 am check, nothing happening, by 5: 30 looking out the window, somebody had made his entrance to the world!
His mama loves him (also true to form!)
Everything went smooth and easy, from walking around to nursing and pooping.
And being cute !
Look how tall he is already! He definitely won't be able to walk under his mama.
Those legs!
It's a good thing that he didn't require a lot of attention, because another colt born that day did need help. They have Percheron broodmares too, and one mare rejected her colt. He wandered around looking for milk for quite a while. Shayla milked colostrum from Belle and bottle fed it to him so he at least had some to get his system started, then they gave him some other stuff in the bottle to get him by until they could get the mare caught and milked. Good thing Belle is a heavy milker and easy to milk!
Never a dull moment on a full moon day on the farm.
