Today was just wonderful; sunny and warm. Ted was working on the dog run most of the day, and I could hear some snoring going on- yeah, Beamer was snoozing in the sun, and snoring! I took a video but it didn't turn out well, so I won't bore you with it. He sure sounds funny though!
I went for a ride on him, a nice lazy one around the big pasture, so relaxing! It felt like a heat wave.
This afternoon I brought Velvet out for some fresh grass, and decided to measure her. That li'l blue girl is just over 10 months old, and she stands a quarter inch under 14 hands!

When I measured her leg for future height, it tells me she is going to mature at 15-2 hh just like her mama, Gussie. So even though Beamer is not so tall, he sure can throw height on his babies. I'll have Sparkle out tomorrow and get her measured up too.

Afterwards I was shooting some photos and I noticed that Chickory has an edema on her belly, so I caught her and checked it out. I've never seen an edema in this spot:

Anyone out there got any info on this? There is no visible injury, she is 2 years old and not bred (of course!) she doesn't seem to be sore there, and while it is a little warm that might just be body heat, it certainly wasn't hot. I'll keep an eye on her, but it doesn't seem to require treatment, although I'm sure open to opinions on that.

You can see the swelling in this picture that I took of the brands on Chickory and Sparkle.
And just a parting shot for all those who are still snowbound.............

Bragger!!! dandelion shots!
Is the edema along the blood vessels to her udder , could be hormonal as she comes into her transitional heat?
Beautiful picture of the dandelions. I just found your blog, what does your brand mean?
That green sure is a welcome sight! Velvet sure is a looker!
Velvet is gorgeous! I see the Beamer in her for sure. She's going to be a beautiful girl all grown up.
As for the edema, we get it here too. Last it was my donkey, and I always thought maybe it was from bug bites? I don't know, but it comes and goes. I've never had it checked out, since it's always gone in a day or two.
I had a mare that had a hernia in that spot, looked very similar, but never had any edema, sorry. And thanks for the dandylion, one reminder of spring I dont like, lol
WOW! Velvet is looking great! Do you have a shot of Velvet and Sparkle together? That would be a cool shot..:-)
Oh that is one fine fine looking filly Shirley. I love that shot over her back of her looking off to the side. Beautiful profile.
Dont know about the edema.... I've only seen it in mares who were getting ready to foal, or who had been stung by something. Could she have been kicked by someone higher up, and gravity pulled the swelling down? Seen that a few times... Treatment was always cold hose, and turn out. Went down in a couple days with no problems.
I was just thinking, our plum trees are usually trying to bloom by now, and the grass is usually greener... and they aren't. Kinda brown and dull out there still. Thanks for the GREEN shot!!
shirley's brand means diamond lazy H quarter horses:D the best!
nice photos, and beautiful horses. I love that little blue girl. She reminds me of my yearling I had a couple years ago.
Tell me, how do you estimate their height with a leg measurement. I'm not familiar with that, and would love to know!
Hey weeds don't count, I have some plants in my Greenhouse, I'm just about ready to get planting......wahoo....
Sarah, I did a post on that a while ago, I'll see if I can find it. Basically you measure from the coronet band, where the hoof meets the hair, to the "break in the knee" -the top of the bone that sits on the cannon bone (sorry, I don't know what it's called) and whatever they are in inches they will be in hands. So Velvet measures 15 and 1/2 inches, so that translates as 15-2hh.
Is the edema any smaller? My gelding popped up with one in that same area a couple of summers ago. It was gone in less than a day. Like Mrs Mom mentioned, I think it was "drainage" from somewhere higher up..gravity let it pool there. I cold-hosed for about 20 minutes and then left him alone to see how he'd be the next day. It was completely gone. Danged horses...
BTW, I love your blue filly!! She is going to be a knockout! :)
That edema on her bell looks exactly like the edema one of my mares gets every single year during the bug season. We don't treat the edema we usually try and keep the bugs of the mare.
I've seen edema similar to that on my horses and have always attributed it to bugs. They've never caused a problem an were gone as quickly as they came.
The girls are looking gorgeous as usual though...that Velvet is all legs!
Gorgeous Velvet! What a looker...and so tall, too. She looks older than 10 months old for sure.
Beamer makes great babies!
I hope whatever is going on with Chicory goes away all on it's own soon, too.
