Other critters

One thing about living on a farm, there's plenty going on. Aside from the horses there are cows:
This is a nice bunch of heifers that are joining the cow herd.
The birds are a never ending source of amusement. There was a large flock of ? not sure what kind of bird, but they were upset about something- they would wheel around and land in a tree, squawking all the while, and then  all pile out and wheel around and go into another tree:
I watched a bit, and discovered the reason for their nervousness- they were being dive bombed by this guy:
I'm pretty sure its an accipter; they feed on birds up to the size of pigeons, and small mammals. It is most likely a sharp-shinned hawk. He sure was raising a rukus! He would fly right in to the tree the other birds were seeking refuge in, and they'd all leave in a hurry.
And then, there are all the spiders. I've learned to live with them as long as they are outdoors. Yesterday when I was closing up a panel gate, I could feel a spiderweb, and just a couple of inches from my hand I could see that I had disturbed this one:

I think I'll just use another gate for a while!

I didn't realize you had cows!

The cows are only here in the summer, someone rents the pasture. We are renters on an 80 acre farm, and the part we use is separate from the cow pasture. I sure enjoy having the cows here though.

We have all kinds of Big super ugly Spiders this year ...they are hanging all over the place ..the worst though is they are abundant in the Greenhouse and I can't bring myself to do any work in there cause they creep me out so bad. I was removing them when there wasn't so many and not sooooooo big!!!!!!Gross!!! Gross and Grosser.

Looks like a Harris Hawk, very cool spider shot too..:-))

Ed, it's too small to be a Harris hawk, and we don't get them here. This guy was only about 10 inches, not much bigger than a Kestrel. It's long tailed, too, although you can't see it well in this photo. He moved so fast, I was lucky to get even this shot.

Nice pictures. The spider is an adult male (see the 'boxing gloves' in front of his face, that's how he has sex). He'll be gone soon, looking for love. Very good to have around...they love flies.
