Getting things done!

We got a lot of yard work done today, cleaned up and pruned underneath the trees so we could get the lawnmower under them- yes, spring is officially here, because Ted mowed the lawn today!
I mentioned a couple of posts ago that we plan to build Beamer a shelter under the overhang that we moved the old rotten trailer out of- here is what it looks like now; where the blue truck is parked will be the B-boy's house, we will have to build some walls and re-fence his pen.
It was time to work Chickory today, since the wind kindly died down . The last time I worked her, she was not too happy, so I backed up a step or two and brought out my trusty Al Grandchamp bosal. I had turned Beamer out into the pasture, so I worked in his pen. Chickory is a very feely horse, super sensitive about being touched, especially around her rump. She about jumps out of her skin with sudden movements too, so that is something to work on another day- today was working on her accepting the rope all over her body. I longed her a bit first, and then started flipping the rope over her back, and letting her drag it on her off side. After the first few flips, she accepted that quite well.

I put the rope around her cinch area and put pressure there, getting her to lead forward. once she had the rope dragging every which way, it was time to put it around her rump, and ask her to accept it quietly. There was some panic with that, but since she couldn't run away from it- I had hold of her with the bosal, which does have a little authority- she soon figured it out.
Overall, it was a really good session, we built trust and willingness. That's all I wanted.

Have you ever used a rope around her rump to make her disengage the hindquarters? My very reactive pony had an issue with things being around his rump like this. You basically run the rope on one side of the halter, just above their hocks and back to their other side. Then when you pull they have to bend their heads towards their butts and turn around in a complete circle to face you. very, very helpful.

Yay Chickory! She's coming along nicely and seems calm about what you're doing with her in that video. Nice!
Beamer's going to have a great new pen and shelter. Wow! Grass???? We've got some sprigs coming up here and there, but nowhere near mowing height.
Enjoy!

Chicory sure is a beautiful horse. I'm glad that you were able to build some kind of trust with her during this last session.

Reading posts like this one makes me realize that I'm so utterly clueless when it comes to horses. I wouldn't know where to begin if I was tasked with training and various other responsibilities that come with having one of these. Thank God for experts like you!

PS
Let me know if training Toby the same way would help. I'll FEDEX him to you ;0) Charge me whatever you want.

Sydney- if you watch the video, that's exactly what I was doing; but it took the whole session to build up to that element.
