In my last post I mentioned that my issue with Mesa is her crowding me- and it's funny that I just found this video that lays it out how to get a horse to respect your space. We all know most of this stuff, but it really helps me to have a visual aid and to have things laid out step by step.
This will be what I work on today with her.

That is EXCELLENT!! It sums it ALL up beautifully!! I tried to teach my friend these lessons with her big thoroughbred last week and it was hard. She leads him from the throat and he was starting to pull back--he even struck her once when he was responding to another horse. I tried to teach her to create a big bubble and to keep him out of that bubble. I worked with him for an hour on a long line first (no roundpen available) and I did all those things. He tried to pull back and get free of me--and he's huge--but I got to the side and pulled him around. He tried to kick out at me, but I never let him close enough for that. By the time I was done with him, I could lead him all over the arena with his lead rope thrown over his back. He was as sweet and docile as a puppy. But my friend had watched the whole thing and she doesn't know if she's up to it. So, I just shared this video with her and my group!!

What an amazing blog! Rebecca had me free lunge Leah in side reins to develop her back and it worked great. I tried a short cut today with a tie down and it was almost a train wreck. He had an interesting article on lunging.
