I have a theory about why she was particularly bad (other than never being handled and living like a wild critter on the range). Look at her, then look at this cow:
You can see that the white cow has no forward vision while the red cow has her eyes set so that she can see ahead;
this old girl , even when she turns her head, must have poor vision, as her eyes are quite sunken in her head. So you can imagine how she handles the world around her: if she can't see it, it must be dangerous, so she charges it. (You can see how she skinned herself up charging everything!) Getting back to my story, she wouldn't go into the pen; just stopped in the alley and took a run at anyone that came within twenty feet of her. So we tried crowding her with a system of gates, which eventually worked, but I, being the brave (foolhardy?) sort, opted to be the first one to try that, and she charged the gate. I wasn't quick enough to turn away and the gate caught me a glancing blow on my eyebrow bone, resulting in a cut and a wonderful black eye. Fortunately, I'm kinda hard-headed, I just mopped up and kept on working. So this morning, it looks much worse, and rather spectacular!

OUCH!! That is gonna be some shiner!
I got nailed by a gate/calf a few years ago ,lit me up too black eye and bruise from hairline to jaw. ( I told everyone ,it was a 300 lb red head , and when I was done with him they took him out on a truck!) take care of yourself.

Ouch...what a shiner! It's amazing what you can see when are looking at the world as a photographer...if not for the SS assignment you might not have even thought about her eyes. I love that about photography.
Yikes! That looks like it really hurt! I don't think I have ever had a black eye, by the looks of 'em, I will try to stay away from gates!
I hope you put ice on it. Who woulda thought your own eye would be the subject of your assignment???

I have noticed working with cows that the narrower between the eyes they are like that one, the more they seem to charge/attack/be absolutely vicious. We have one right now that is totally dangerous. Has the "forward vision" but very narrow top to her head.
I think your theory is right-on. Too bad you didn't realize it before the injury. Yikes!
You're lucky it didn't get cut open and require stitches, too.
Would a cattle prod be a better option for a 'mad' cow like that one? Or would she still have charged?

Lisa, a cattle prod wouldn't work on a cow like this; it would only make her madder. She had had enough and wanted to be left alone; preferrably far away from people. Once we got her in a pen, she was quiet. Glad I wasn't the one who had to load her out!
