This was about 100 yards from the house. The calves gang up and chase him, but the mama cows ignore him.
This was taken around supper time, I was only about 50 yards from him. I got a little video :
He spotted me, and walked towards me, then went to his sweet spot and resumed hunting.
Yesterday, I heard a big ruckus from the resident ravens, and when I investigated, I found a fledgling half eaten on the ground. At first I thought our cats got it, but it was too shredded and one leg was completely missing, and the cats had only been out for a few minutes, so I think the coyote got it. The pole shed is only a few yards from the house. This coyote is getting way to cozy here, he needs to move on or eat lead. I won't have him going after my cats- they are big strong cats, but they would be no match for him.

Coyotes have been horrible around here this year! We had one kill a friends colt. The colt was 48 hours old and HUGE I mean he was such a big colt I couldn't pick him up like I normally can young foals. They keep coming back so far 10 have them have been "fed" lead.
Odd, we have never had a problem with coyotes. They come through our yard and never have bothered a cat. And they certainly have never killed a calf. I don't really care for ravens, so that wouldn't bother me if they got eaten.
On the other hand, a few shots and they should stay away for a while.
Sydney- that's horrible! I'm suprised the mama horse didn't get in there and kill he coyote. My Belle mare doesn't let the dogs near her new babies.
Crystal- I've lost plenty of cats to coyotes. Janice did a post last year that showed a coyote carrying off one of her full grown, big male cats.
Coyotes have their place in the food chain, but I don't like it when they even consider thinking of one of my critters as part of that chain!
I'm with you on coyotes...they can hunt, but not in the yard or close to the barns. they will kill and eat cats...or chickens, or other small things.

He's pretty darn brazen. I like that Coyotes take care of some of the little critters.... but you are right, they need to do that out there, away from MY place, too!
