Odds and ends was the challenge this week.
Odd- can anyone tell me if they've ever seen a bit like this, and how it was used? Here is another view.
Also in the odd file, can you tell me what this next item is used for? (Hint- if you're from Germany, you probably know!)
And in the "end" file; how's this for a fine end?
But this year brought it's sadness too, and I leave you with another end, my mother's funeral.
My daughter had just laid a carnation on the casket, and we sprinkled holy water too.

Very interesting odds and ends! The bit looks to be a "butterfly" and/or "button" bit. It looks like the roller bar fits against the horse's mouth/cheek and the reins attach to the D's next to it. See here for photos: http://www.jdpsales.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=27_59 I think it's for pullers so that the bar snugs against their mouth as they pull against the reins.
Is that a German tobacco pipe? Very pretty.

We have a bit like that on an old driving bridle. I'll ask the B-man and he'll know what it's called.
frank says it is a pipe shaped cup. he says its to big to be a pipe.
I wanted to do some old bits, but it's way too cold to spend time in the barn! I thought it may be a driving bit, also. Sorry about your mom. hugs.

I agree with One Red Horse...great dignity in that photo. Interesting that you really did odds and ends...I did not think about the ends part.
By the way, we had 26 people for Christmas Eve and those corks are part of a collection.

Ok back out comes my BIG Book of Bits!!
It is a Acme Driving Bit or also known as the "Success Bit". Patent by Robert Van Arsdale, Racine, WI, No. 422,469, Mar. 4, 1890.
That's all the info my book gives me on it, but maybe you can google it with that info and get more on it!

Hey, Tara, I did google it but there was no real info. I want to know how it hooked up and what the purpose of the rollers is.
No one guessed the function of the Ulm Pipe- it is a Macro shot, and the actual size is about 2 1/2inches high. I'll let you guess a bit longer.
Hmm dang, yeah my book doesn't give any more info on it either... I am quite curious about it as well.. I actually have a few friends who may know something about it (study old bits), I'll ask around!

Great post. That bit certainly looks antiquey and painful, looks can be deceiving( I hope)That horse has a nice ass.You know if he was human.......never mind.

Sorry for your loss. I hope that the love of family, friends and faith give you strength and healing. Nice photos...I especially liked the hind end of the horse and the scenery from behind.

So so sorry about your Mom. Your photo from that day is beautiful, though.
It used to be that taking photos during a funeral was in poor taste, but I'm glad that frame of thought has changed. Sometimes it's very helpful to have those photos to provide a peaceful and lovely closure to all the special memories.

For enquiring minds; the pipe is a schnapps pipe, kinda like the German version of a shooter. Works really good with Sambucca!
I woke up in the middle of the night last night thinking about the Ulm pipe! I'd decided that it was a souvenir of the town of Ulm...but I like the Schnapps pipe much better!
Well, it is a souvenir from the town of Ulm, so you were right! It was given to us from some guests we had from that part of Germany.
I never would have guessed that it was a schnapps shot pipe/glass. Cool!!
The funeral photo is very emotional. It made me so sad.
